Sophia is a very trusting person. She tends toward compassion and forgiveness in her general nature, deeply believing in the deep-seeded good of every man and the hope for change, which includes granting many second chances (and, on occasion, third and fourth chances as well). A rather personable girl in general, she gets along well with others and is especially gracious and charming when meeting new people. She is well liked by most she knows and does her best to help keep their good wishes, sometimes spending too much time and money on an impractical desire to impress.

Despite this, Sophia would name herself a stoic and rather reserved individual, often preferring her own thoughts and opinions to those of the people around her. She attempts to make her own decisions and later present them to others, usually in a desperate attempt to compensate for the great impact her parents had on her life and the expectations of her aunt and uncle. Loyal to a fault and trying nearly as hard to please those close to her, the girl would be deemed a hopeless romantic to those that know her best and a bit of a “golden child” by how susceptible she is to her parents’ wishes.

Because of this sometimes overwhelming need to prove herself as well as her desire to be a supportive and capable woman, Sophia can sometimes be mistaken for being distant and can be hard to understand. Caught in her own world, too much time is spent dwelling on the ideal future she can create for herself and others, rather than present facts and feelings. Though she has nothing but best wishes and good intentions in all of what she does, sometimes she can be pushed into doing things that may not be right with her moral code or the law at the time; this is a rare occurrence and, as a norm, Sophia strongly believes in doing what is “good”.

While Sophia is a level-headed girl with a warm heart and cool head the vast majority of the time, she can also be a fragile creature. Criticism is often taken to heart, pushing her to excel or work harder toward whatever project she has dedicated herself to at the time. Severe emotion can cause her to “break”—a rare testament to her insecure nature—which can force her into intense anger that causes rage, jealousy, and bitter resentment sometimes resulting in cruelty or persecution; again, this is rare and very few know of this condition.

A strict background and a general passion for efficiency cause a tendency toward order and routine. She focuses on details and facts, sometimes forgetting the larger picture, though in the end she will nearly always trust instinct over logic. Instead of being harsh with those who make mistakes, Sophia instead attempts to teach them the error of their ways and considers those that look down on others to be ignorant. While she places emphasis on carrying through with her word, she has a hard time committing to a single decision when other options are present, choosing to follow the different paths for as long as possible to choose the wisest direction. Sophia is careful, deliberate, and precise. She acts with caution and hates spontaneity when it accompanies potential dangers.

Sophia is a nearly ideal family person. She does her best to support and encourage her significant other in every aspect of her life—which can sometimes be considered smothering, though she attempts moderation. Children adore her and she, in turn, knows how to talk to them, teach them, and to help them grow.


Sophia is a very sincere, honest, honorable, and loyal girl. She holds great pride and strength in the relationships of all kinds that she keeps. A very educated and well bred individual, she has been raised with above average intelligence, a great ability to reason and solve problems, and an instinctual sense of tact, manners, and lady-like propriety. She is a level-headed person with tender compassion. Instead of dwelling on her failures, Sophia does her best to look instead to the potential idealistic situation that can be created and strives toward it. Organized, generally concise, and considerate to those who may be less educated, the girl is an overall charming and kind person.

Perhaps too kind, Sophia is loyal to a fault. She is secure in her set of beliefs, values, and morals, but has been known to act against these beliefs on occasion for the sole reason of pleasing those close to her. A deep-seeded need to endure and pressure to succeed force her to always try to work harder toward goals that may not even be right for her; she is, in essence, a people pleaser. She is often viewed as distant because of her being stoic and often caught within her own thoughts. Though her eternal hope is considered by herself to be a strength, others often consider it a weakness.

Sophia was born to Eleanor [Arima] and Charles Vander in Forest Grove, Oregon. Eleanor worked as a part-time nurse at a small, family-owned medical clinic in the town. Charles worked as a con artist, doing more of his work in Portland than at home, living in both places in equal shares. He was often the sort to help protect the guilty, accepting large sums of money to make people disappear. He was good at his job too. Though he took to alcohol, he was never really an alcoholic. The child was an unfortunate surprise and was a burden on their small and unstable family. He still spent half of his time in Portland with various mistresses, and half in Forest Grove with his wife.

Eleanor quit her job when she became pregnant, mooching off the modest amounts of money Charles was able to pull in. Though she didn’t really want to see or raise the child, she opted not to return to work after Sophia’s birth. As a result, her mother became extremely strict and was nearly always angry. Eleanor would slap the child for doing things like wetting her bed or scraping her knee. This attitude drove Charles away and the few times he came home, he began drinking more heavily.

She was only five when her father began to sexually abuse her. The marriage had been broken for much longer and, with the time away from his mistresses completely unsatisfactory now, the man couldn’t stand having nothing for him. As detached from the child as he was, it was fairly easy to justify it in his mind. She was seven when her mother found out and decided to pretend it wasn’t happening. Of course, she didn’t really realize it was wrong until later. Instead, it only taught the child to escape into a fantasy world of how things could be.

At the age of eight, she was saved from her situation when her parents decided to abandon her. Charles moved to Portland and, in response, Eleanor up and left to never be heard from again. Sophia was taken in by her relatives, Edward and Lily Arima. The two were a considerably older couple from an extremely wealthy family. In truth, all of the Arima family was wealthy, successful, accomplished, and her actual parents were the black mark of the family’s history whom they all looked down upon.

In response to her horrendous parenting and the kindness of her new family, Sophia began to do everything in her power to excel. A smart girl with an amazing work ethic, it wasn’t hard for her to stand out. Factor in her relatively attractive appearance and it was no wonder why she was top of the class, helping in committees, participating in sports, etc. Throughout her childhood, even her cousins and other relatives would make remarks about her inferior birth and she was never allowed to forget her past.

Despite this, she never felt unloved in her family. After the first few years, she began to regain the trust she had lost and now she understood how love should feel. Her fantasy world and escapism were still important to her because she needed something to retreat to. In her family, she became a model student and child, responsible for preserving their name in all the best ways to protect the reputation of her aunt and uncle. She tried not to allow her weaknesses to show through and, when upset, would often become stoic rather than dealing with her issues.

Her entire schooling was much the same until her junior year. She had one boyfriend who only lasted for a short time; puppy love. Otherwise, her entire existence continued to be the mere quest for perfection.

At 17, in her junior year, everything changed. A teacher’s aide who also helped to coach her lacrosse team asked her to stay after practice once. It wasn’t anything entirely out of the ordinary and they practiced for another hour before she returned to the locker room to wash up and head home. He cornered her in the showers and she had no chance. The man she had trusted raped her.

Sophia wasn’t the same afterward. Her understanding of trusting others was again shattered and she didn’t know how to handle the pain and feelings. Everything wrong with her seemed to get worse with her sudden inability to cope. The girl began to seek obsessive control related to her body, because everything else felt out of her control. She would insist she never went so far as to be considered anorexic, but any knowledgeable professional would disagree.

Refusing to go to school and her aunt and uncle refusing to allow her to work without a proper education, the couple suggested that perhaps she try to take a break at the institution. Sophia refused to go at first, desperate to protect the reputations of her true family. After some convincing, and a compromise of her aunt and uncle lying about her whereabouts, the girl agreed to go.

A few days later, they pulled into Chesire and she had never felt more broken or alone. Because the rape was only a few weeks prior, the Anorexia and Post Traumatic have not yet become severe (in fact, technically the short length of the PTSD would make it Acute Stress Disorder for the time being).
